Let’s Talk About Changes

This probably isn’t post material but I figured I had to write it even if it never gets published.

Recently, SEOmoz.org made some changes to the way comments are displayed.  In some ways they are subtle changes as they don’t really alter the way commenting works, but in some ways they are pretty dramatic.  Regardless of the reason and functionality for the change, I am amazed that the change was not accompanied by a post about the obvious change.

In an industry that strives to build up visitor loyalty, it’s surprising that any site would make user interface changes without announcing the change or providing a place for feedback.  I mean I am so motivated to talk about this change that I’m taking the time to write a post about it – what does that say about the power users and uber-loyal visitors?

In some cases this would be a half-decent viral campaign because it would force discussion about SEOmoz outside of SEOmoz, but does SEOmoz need that kind of attention?  I think not.  It isn’t ground-breaking technology and would only highlight our superficial preferences (much the same way my post here does).  So should sites announce every change they make or only the most significant changes – and what’s the difference?
